DIRECTV to Launch Portable Satellite TV Systems
by Bob Wallace - xchange Online
While telcos labor
to offer meaningful video to handheld devices, DIRECTV will offer this spring a
package that will enable its subscribers to watch TV on the go from a portable
briefcase-style system comprising a TV screen with an integrated 17-inch
monitor, a flat antenna and rechargeable battery.
The DBS operator said its DIRECTV Sat-Go offering enables the user to find
line-of-sight to satellites and receive programming within minutes after a
simple set up procedure following the opening of the portable unit. It’s
designed for outdoor and indoor settings including camping, tailgating, college
dorms, hotels and as a second TV in a home.
A key factor, the price of the package, has not yet been released, but is
expected to be detailed in the coming months.
“The DIRECTV system is a cool concept in the sense that it has been designed for
complete portability and ease of use,” said Teresa Mastrangelo, principal
analyst with BroadbandTrends.com. “However, it’s difficult to assess just how
important it will be for the average consumer to have this capability.” Pricing
combined with an explanation of how the package would work in an indoor
environment would help, she added.
Interestingly, the DIRECTV offering was created by TV writer/producer and
DIRECTV customer Rick Rosner as a means to stay connected to news and
information when away from the TV. Even when wireless operators provide TV to
handsets, it will be on a screen dwarfed by the size of the DBS operator’s
17-inch monitor.
Further, many telcos have a ways to go to offer the programming packages offered
by DBS operators such as DIRECTV and DISH Networks, which already boast a huge
menu of high definition programming.
Rosner was tired of bringing his DIRECTV Dish and Receiver with him while
traveling to different location shoots across the country. He teamed up with
DIRECTV engineer, David Kuether, to develop the prototype. "Lugging that
equipment with me and trying to set it up in my hotel room was exhausting, and I
knew there had to be a better way to bring my DIRECTV service with me everywhere
I went," Rosner said.
When not being used as a portable/travel unit, DIRECTV Sat-Go can also be
utilized as a stand-alone, in-home DIRECTV receiver and television. The LCD TV
screen has a built-in receiver, which the operator said can be separated from
the DIRECTV Sat-Go antenna casing and connected to a customer’s existing DIRECTV
satellite dish.
Current DIRECTV customers can mirror the authorized DIRECTV programming that
they receive at home to their DIRECTV Sat-Go receivers for an additional $4.99
per month. DIRECTV Sat-Go customers will have access to DIRECTV's programming
lineup, including the premium sports subscription packages, such as NFL Sunday
Ticket and Mega March Madness.
The package includes component and composite A/V inputs, a satellite in
connection, a USB link and is AC and DC capable using a cigarette-lighter
adapter, which is included. It also features a rechargeable and replaceable,
laptop-style battery, according to the company. The monitor features two
speakers.
