Salira Intros Multi-Wavelength PON System
Salira Systems announced that it will
unveil the industry’s most flexible and cost-effective multi-wavelength EPON
solution at the Cable Show in New Orleans. Known as MW-PON, the new solution
enables carriers and operators to quadruple the bandwidth capacity of existing
fiber networks. Salira’s solution uses an elegant implementation of Coarse Wave
Division Multiplexing (CWDM) to increase bandwidth capacity dramatically without
any upgrades to the outside plant.
“Our goal in designing this product was to allow for maximum flexibility as it
relates to deployment topology,” commented Jeff Stribling, VP Marketing and
Customer Service for Salira. “Salira’s solution increases the bandwidth capacity
of a single fiber strand by a factor of four. This enables carriers and
operators to offer individual service level agreements with extremely
high-bandwidth, or to increase the end-user density reachable on a single
fiber.”
Salira’s MW-PON increases the bandwidth capacity from 1 Gbps to 4 Gbps for each
PON link. Traffic is carried over four wavelengths, thereby quadrupling
bandwidth that can be transmitted over a single fiber optic cable. Moreover, MW-PON’s
bandwidth capacity is symmetric, meaning that end-users can upload data at the
same enhanced speeds.
Salira uses SFP modules on the CPE side to allow service providers to re-assign
equipment easily as conditions change. Unlike DWDM solutions that are costly to
implement and change, Salira’s cost-effective MW-PON solution gives operators
the ability to easily re-assign equipment at both the head end and at the
customer premises for maximum flexibility.
Salira’s products are based on the IEEE 802.3ah protocols for Ethernet Passive
Optical Networks (EPON). Salira was the first EPON equipment provider to attain
MEF-9 and MEF-14 certification status for its Carrier Ethernet services. The
company’s EPON platform is ideally-suited for the high-speed transmission of
voice and data – the most critical applications for business customers. Salira
is also working with service providers worldwide to deliver IPTV, High Speed
Internet Access and VoIP to consumers, all while driving cost out of the network
