China Passes U.S. for Broadband Leadership in 1Q08
At the end of 1Q08, global fixed broadband subscribers exceeded 352 million, representing quarter-over-quarter growth of 5 percent and 21 percent year-over-year, adding nearly 62 million subscribers, and achieving steady growth year over year.
China has become the single largest broadband country with 67.8 million, finally surpassing the United States, which ended 1Q08with 67.5 million subscribers. The next largest country is Japan with 28.8 million subscribers.
DSL remains the most widely deployed broadband technology, representing 66 percent of total subscribers, while cable modem subscribers represent 21 percent, and other broadband technologies (Fiber-to-the-X, two-way satellite, broadband power line and fixed broadband wireless) represent 13 percent.
